SOBTA After School Enrichment Program

SOBTA After School Enrichment Program

Sanni Ojibara Basketball Training Academy is a non-profit basketball enrichment organization. The mission is to help young people use the sport of basketball to learn discipline and confidence and to recognize and build on their strengths and resilience. The focus is to provide an outlet for youth who live in communities where they may be limited as to time spent practicing sports, interacting positively with peers, and acquiring useful life skills in a safe environment.  SOBTA is able to engage youth in basketball to further inspire academic progress and reduce risk factors they may face including truancy, substance use, gang affiliation, and involvement in the juvenile justice system.

Program hours are from 4pm-6pm. Youth will have time to work on their homework assignments in the first thirty minutes of the program. Every week youth will work on a core social skill through a combination of conversations with peers, experiential lessons, guest speakers, and practicing skill on the court.  Some of the skills to be covered include:

  • Self-esteem, confidence, and positive self-image
  • Positive conflict resolution and coping skills
  • Making healthy choices and using positive judgment
  • Dealing with academic pressures
